The Downfall Of Simple Technology

It's been eons since I started reading the paper again. And boy, I missed it. When I looked back at the time when I stopped reading the information medium, I thought to myself, what had I been doing that was so bloody important that I forgot to read the paper? Of course, I can always go to the internet to check out the latest news. But if I would, I wouldn't have gotten to read a mind-boggling piece of article about a woman's take on a global issue that's sweeping the world as we know it. Today, at this day and age, we all breathe technology. People on the streets are not considered as the NOW community if they don't have their iPhones or cellphones (a lot of people still opt to choose cellphones other than iPhone as their communication companion, including me) glued to their ears at all times. It's not surprising to me if tomorrow, the pay phone will be demolished and people will only depend on portable communicators. Everything's wireless now. Don't forget that. Anyway, the woman in the article BANNED her whole family from playing video games, listening to iPods, texting from their phones or going online for a good 6 months. They even stopped using electricity. WHAT? No Facebook comments to look forward to everyday? No Grand Theft Auto to kill the time? Worst, no TEXTING??? That's right. The implausible part of it all was they made it out. Alive. After 6 months of the strictly brutal no-technology policy. The woman's children also got great 'benefits' from technology abstinence. Instead of damaging his eyes from playing video games all day, the woman's son got hooked up on playing the saxophone that he applied for a music course in college. Her daughters' grades have also improved because they read books, did extra studying and played board games instead of texting and commenting on Facebook.

It's actually sad to think that what if 10 years from now, there would be no more newspapers to print on? Everything is posted online, whether we like it or not. People working for the newspapers would be jobless, no more postmen, paper boys, none of them. People will be hooked on to computers and laptops, with no social contacts whatsoever. Why talk when you can chat online right? WRONG. Hollywood has gotten into our heads. There has been various movies about technology taking over the world. Humans inventing computers and machines that are a lot brighter than ourselves. What if there exist such a crazy person who would invent these things so that people won't have to work anymore? Then it's up to John Connor to save us and eliminate all those Terminators. And heck, it wouldn't be Christian Bale.

Though technology is fast gaining recognition (laughs), I still choose to buy my daily newspaper to read the latest news. Occasionally, there would be times when I pop open my laptop to search some quick updates, but rest assured, simple technology is still my babe. There are still candles everywhere instead of lamps, old cellphones instead of Blackberrys and mp3s instead of iPods. Skynet wouldn't be invading the world anytime soon and robots are not working as maids and living in our homes. Life right now, is still awesome. Whether it's technologically-advanced, or not.
